Media blasting is the process of propelling particles (tiny beads) from a specialized blasting machine using the power of compressed air. This converts the media, or small beads along with the compressed air, into an effective cleaning treatment that takes skill, the proper equipment and good judgment.
Media blasting can be used to remove rust or contaminants from a metal surface prior to the powder coating process. Media blasting can help reduce or eliminate irregularities in metal and then smooth, roughen or even shape a surface.
Media Blasting Steps
01
Surface Preparation
The surface to be treated is carefully inspected and cleaned to remove any loose debris or contaminants.
02
Selection of Abrasive Media
Depending on the project and the surface material, an appropriate abrasive media is chosen. Common media options include sand, glass beads, aluminum oxide, and garnet.
03
Blasting Process
The selected media is propelled at the surface using specialized equipment, often at high pressure, to remove paint, rust, scale, or other unwanted coatings.
04
Surface Inspection
After blasting, the surface is inspected to ensure it meets the desired cleanliness and texture standards.
Types of Media Blasting
- Sandblasting: Traditional sandblasting uses sand as the abrasive media. It’s effective for heavy-duty applications but is less commonly used today due to health and environmental concerns.
- Glass Bead Blasting: Glass beads are used as the media in this method, producing a smooth and satin-like finish, making it ideal for delicate or precision work.
- Aluminum Oxide Blasting: Aluminum oxide is a versatile and commonly used media, effective for both light and heavy applications, with variations suitable for different surfaces.
- Garnet Blasting: Garnet is often used for its natural hardness and ability to produce an even and textured surface. It’s suitable for various applications, including metal and wood.
If you have a metal automotive part, old ornamental iron, a bicycle or metal lawn furniture that has become an eyesore, don’t discard it and needlessly spend money on something new when you can rejuvenate that old part or piece of furniture with quality media blasting and a brand new powder coat finish!
Benefits
- Efficient Surface Preparation: Media blasting is a highly effective method for preparing surfaces, removing rust, paint, and contaminants quickly, saving you time and effort in your projects.
- Versatile and Eco-Friendly: Media blasting can be customized for different materials and applications, and it is an environmentally friendly process that doesn’t involve harmful chemicals or solvents.
- Enhanced Surface Adhesion: By creating a clean and textured surface, media blasting ensures better adhesion for subsequent coatings, whether it’s paint, powder coating, or other finishes.
- Restoration and Renewal: Media blasting can breathe new life into old or worn surfaces, making it an ideal choice for restoring and renewing items, machinery, and equipment, giving them a fresh and like-new appearance.

What our customers say
Melanie2025-09-05Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. RPM exceeded my expectations! With the help of choosing the right color and a reasonable price my fireplace looks fantastic. I’m so happy with how it turned out. Debra Richards2024-05-31Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had wrought iron outdoor furniture that, after 37 years, had seen better days. It looked destined for the landfill. I found RPM Powder Coating using Google and submitted an online request for a quote from their website…on a Sunday when they were closed. I received a response from Jamie the same day promising the quote later in the day. Jamie kept his first promise and the quote was very reasonable, particularly considering the cost to replace the furniture would have been five times the quote to refinish it. The next day I called and Jamie promised we would be pleased with their work. The RPM team kept that promise but underestimated my delight upon seeing the finished project. The furniture looked as good as the day we purchased it! Without hesitation I recommend the RPM team. They conducted themselves with honesty and integrity throughout the process, were very professional, produced results of the highest quality, and they made it clear they appreciated our business. We could have chosen another company closer to our home, but we’re happy we chose to go a little out of the way to RPM. Our time and money was well spent. Take your project to RPM. You’ll be happy you did. They have much to be proud of and deserve their outstanding reputation. Well done Team RPM…Thank you! Gregg Fiorina2024-02-06Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Have an older metal office file cabinet. Jamie and crew powder coated it in satin black. Looks great. Highly recommend. Michael Minor2023-11-19Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I dropped of several parts for my race car to get powder coated. 12 wheels and some other miscellaneous parts. I was very pleased with the service. They got the job done pretty quickly, and the parts looked good. They palletized my wheels to make it easier to get home in my truck as well. Nice group of folks. Thanks guys. Patrick Petit2023-10-29Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My wife and I had several pieces that needed to be sand blasted and powder coated but hadn’t come across the right team to work with until we found RPM Powder Coating on Yelp. From the first time I called to ask about their business, I knew this was a professional and friendly company and that our needs could be met. I shared with the owner, Jamie about a few pieces I wanted to bring in which included an cast-iron urn and base along with a few antique light switch plates. The urn and base needed to be blasted and powder coated, and the switch plates only needed to be blasted taking them down to bare metal. Jamie said these are among the types of work his crew handles all the time and we arranged to bring them in. We were warmly greeted by a member of the team upon walking through the front door which quickly confirmed what I felt over the phone…trust. Jamie’s staff provided amazing service from start to finish. We described what we wanted and Jamie recommended a specific type of powder coat finish on our urn/base that would hold up well over the years in a high-UV area in front of our home. While dropping our pieces off, he showed us some of the other jobs in progress and we were certainly impressed. Jamie’s crew who offloaded our pieces from my car and performed the work did an amazing job, and when we came back to pick everything up, it was very apparent that they held a high regard for detail because everything was perfect! Jamie, we not only want to thank you for the outstanding work by you and your team, but also for the personal and professional service we received from everyone we met! We’re extremely satisfied and have several other pieces to bring back in the spring as we discussed. Sincerely, Patrick and Andrea Albert Papikyants2023-03-08Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very pleased with the quality and customer service of these guys. I got my frame back a lot earlier than expected and the price was unbeatable. These guys are the one stop shop for power coating. I’ll be back for sure! Jim Jarrett2021-06-03Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What a great experience, working with Jamie and the rest of the crew. We had a garden bench that's at least 50 years old - and probably older - and a couple of garden chairs as well that are also vintage. I had done a couple of refinishes before, with just a wire brush and rustoleum paint. We really wanted to rejuvenate them, so I got in touch with RPM. They were really helpful in making the choices of colors and finish, as well as keeping the budget reasonable. The results are stunning. We're incredibly happy and recommend RPM to anyone.
