sand-blasting-media-blasting-inside-2-min

Media blasting is the process of propelling particles (tiny beads) from a specialized blasting machine using the power of compressed air. This converts the media, or small beads along with the compressed air, into an effective cleaning treatment that takes skill, the proper equipment and good judgment.

Media blasting can be used to remove rust or contaminants from a metal surface prior to the powder coating process. Media blasting can help reduce or eliminate irregularities in metal and then smooth, roughen or even shape a surface.

Media Blasting Steps

01
Surface Preparation
The surface to be treated is carefully inspected and cleaned to remove any loose debris or contaminants.
02
Selection of Abrasive Media
Depending on the project and the surface material, an appropriate abrasive media is chosen. Common media options include sand, glass beads, aluminum oxide, and garnet.
03
Blasting Process
The selected media is propelled at the surface using specialized equipment, often at high pressure, to remove paint, rust, scale, or other unwanted coatings.
04
Surface Inspection
After blasting, the surface is inspected to ensure it meets the desired cleanliness and texture standards.

Types of Media Blasting

  1. Sandblasting: Traditional sandblasting uses sand as the abrasive media. It’s effective for heavy-duty applications but is less commonly used today due to health and environmental concerns.
  2. Glass Bead Blasting: Glass beads are used as the media in this method, producing a smooth and satin-like finish, making it ideal for delicate or precision work.
  3. Aluminum Oxide Blasting: Aluminum oxide is a versatile and commonly used media, effective for both light and heavy applications, with variations suitable for different surfaces.
  4. Garnet Blasting: Garnet is often used for its natural hardness and ability to produce an even and textured surface. It’s suitable for various applications, including metal and wood.
If you have a metal automotive part, old ornamental iron, a bicycle or metal lawn furniture that has become an eyesore, don’t discard it and needlessly spend money on something new when you can rejuvenate that old part or piece of furniture with quality media blasting and a brand new powder coat finish!

Benefits

  1. Efficient Surface Preparation: Media blasting is a highly effective method for preparing surfaces, removing rust, paint, and contaminants quickly, saving you time and effort in your projects.
  2. Versatile and Eco-Friendly: Media blasting can be customized for different materials and applications, and it is an environmentally friendly process that doesn’t involve harmful chemicals or solvents.
  3. Enhanced Surface Adhesion: By creating a clean and textured surface, media blasting ensures better adhesion for subsequent coatings, whether it’s paint, powder coating, or other finishes.
  4. Restoration and Renewal: Media blasting can breathe new life into old or worn surfaces, making it an ideal choice for restoring and renewing items, machinery, and equipment, giving them a fresh and like-new appearance.
